5 Easy Steps To Color Your Hair At Home

Choosing the right hair color and coverage

If you have grey hair, it is important that you choose the hair color that is meant for grey hair coverage. I suggest you choose the shade according to your natural hair color. Just be in the safer range of shades to avoid disaster. There are different ways to hide the grey but if you want to fully cover you will need to use a permanent color. However, if you are new to coloring your hair, you will want to play safe and try the semi-permanent instead of the permanent one. Because semi-permanent hair color fades away in a few washes. And once you are familiar and more confident you can go for the permanent hair colors.

Prepare your hair for color

Preparing your hair for the color is important. I like to wash my hair a couple days before dying my hair. I make sure that my hair is clean but also has the natural oils after two days of washing. The oils in our hair helps to protect the scalp from all the chemicals in the hair color. Besides, if you have any irritation or cuts on the scalp, wait until they have healed. It is also important not to use hair color after you have done some hair treatment like straitening or perming to avoid extra damage to the hair.

Perform a patch test

We tend to ignore the caution mentioned on the box to do the patch test. It is very important to perform a patch test 48 hours in advance. This will ensure that you don’t have any allergic reaction after using the color. ( Some people are very sensitive and get rashes etc.) Always read the instruction and follow the leave-in time instructed on the box.

Protect your skin at the hairline

I have learned this the hard way. Hair colors temporarily discolor the skin along the hair line. To protect the skin from discoloration apply a rich cream or Vaseline on the skin around your hairline to create a barrier between the skin and hair color. If by chance you still get some stain on your skin, just gently exfoliate and it will get rid of the stain.

Choose a proper place for application

Always choose a well lit location to apply the color and also keep all the tools laid out in front of you. Turn up the lights and open the curtains. Color can look different in artificial and natural light, so be sure to give yourself access to both before you start placing the color on your hair. Always start near your roots as the hair is new and needs more processing time than the ends. It is specifically important if you have grey hair that needs coverage. Besides if you have been using permanent hair color regularly, your hair still has the color and you need not apply to full hair. Just touching up the roots is enough.

Post Hair Care

It is important to take regular care of your hair after coloring them at home. Hair colors are harsh chemicals that tend to dry the hair. Deep conditioning is a great way to keep them healthy and shiny. Using hair oil or hair serum will prevent frizzy hair. Oiling your hair once a week before washing does wonders to dry hair. Try to limit use of heat on hair if not necessary.

It is obvious to use old or dark colored clothing and using an old towel to wipe your hair. Because you don’t want to stain your pillow or spoil your clothing. Be careful while rinsing off your hair. You don’t want to stain the shower area, or the shower curtain either. These are my 5 easy steps to color your hair at home. Do you color your hair at home?
